"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth." --Matthew 5:5
"All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty." -- Proverbs 14:23
Introduction:
Did you know that shoes could talk? When I think about my life’s story, I was teased about a lot of things, including having at least one talking shoe, the fake Converse that you wore because your family could not afford the real Converse with the logo on the ankle and the back of the heel. Well, when you spend a lot of time outdoors playing everything from frozen tag to touch football, the bottom of your sole gets separated from the top of your shoe. But in my story, I kept playing and I have gone from wearing shoes that I had to Duct tape together to having two closets filled with shoes. My story isn’t about shoes. My story is about how a poor kid from Fort Wayne, Indiana went from of f-brand obscurity to award-winning sportswriter, author of three books, owner of a master’s degree in education, and a winner of a teacher of the year award.

My walk through life started by persevering through obstacles in order to let my light shine. I didn’t do it alone; I had strong supportive parents and people who overlooked the shoes with the holes in them and took a chance on me. I’m humbly indebted to them.

I’m writing this because it’s my time to give back. I want the opportunity to inspire and motivate young people to aspire to be great despite their perceived shortcomings. I’ve done it before. I’ve aspired youth as a sports writer in Fort Wayne and Marion, Indiana, as an author of the books Kick Some Rocks, Ninety-Nine Problems, and Smart is the New Swag, and as a teacher at IPS#110, Perry Meridian Middle School, Belzer Middle School, and Options Westfield School.

Now, I want to take my Jordan’s to your organization. I think I can help our youth. If you believe in me–give me a shot. After all, I’ve been a classroom teacher for 26 years–and I have done more than taught English/Language Arts–I’ve taught how to be successful in life. My message is simple: If I can do it–you can, too!
